The Office of the Provost and the School of Social Work will host a farewell reception for Dr. Cheryl Dozier, on Wednesday, July 25 from 3:00 PM-5:00 PM in the Georgia Center for Continuing Education's Magnolia Ballroom, in recognition of her 17 years of service to the University and her recent appointment as President of Savannah State University.
Dozier joined the faculty of the School of Social Work in 1995 as an Assistant Professor and quickly became known for her expertise in the area of Diversity, Chemical Dependency, African and African-American Studies, Spirituality and Higher Education. During her tenure at the UGA, she has served as Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs at the Gwinnett University Center, Chief Diversity Officer and Associate Provost for Institutional Diversity and director of the Ghana Study Abroad program. She was also a faculty researcher with the award-winning Foot Soldier Project for Civil Rights Studies and Research and was promoted to Full Professor in 2011.
Dozier was appointed interim president of Savannah State University in April 2011. In May 2012, she was named as the permanent president by the University System of Georgia Board of Regents.
"Dr. Dozier has demonstrated a great capacity for leadership and clear ability to unite the campus and the community," said Hank Huckaby, Chancellor of the University System of Georgia. "Her work as interim has been impressive and it is the right decision to allow her the opportunity to provide permanent leadership for the University."
