Sandra Murphy is the Director of Field Education for the School of Social Work. She ensures that field programs are in compliance with the standards of the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), the governing body for graduate and undergraduate professional social work education programs in the US. With the field faculty, she oversees placements of students into field settings, ensures proper training of field instructors, and oversees field program evaluation.
Previously Dr. Murphy was Director of Field Education at the School of Social Work at Western Michigan University (WMU), Kalamazoo, Michigan. She reorganized and updated its program, directed the development of a searchable online database of field placements, and brought field instructors actively into the philosophy of field through enhanced orientation and training, and annual field instructor appreciation conferences.
During twenty-five years as a practicing clinical social worker, Dr. Murphy has worked with children, adolescents, individuals, couples, and families and was licensed as a marriage and family therapist as well as a clinical social worker. She has also been a clinical supervisor, program manager, and a hospital director of Social Work. She has worked in public child welfare services, hospitals, and both inpatient and outpatient mental health services. She served for as a field instructor for the University of Michigan and Saginaw Valley State University.
